Meta Data Matters, and yes I KNOW this is 2008

OK, meta data stuffing was soooo 2001. And yes, this is 2008. I’m not telling you that stuffing your meta tags is going to get you to #1 in the SERPS, but it won’t hurt.

Even if meta tags don’t get you a better rank for your keywords, they sure as hell can help with a couple of other things. For instance:

Reasons why you should give a shit about your Meta Tags:

  1. Your meta-description is what shows up beneath your title in the SERPS (search engine results page) For example, I custom wrote the meta-description for my seo consulting service homepage here:meta data yoSo you can see that even apart from the SEO advantage, there is a click-thru advantage that you’ll get. And what the hell is a good placement in Google if nobody ever clicks thru to your site?
  2. Better meta tags will get your shitty pages out of the supplemental results. If you have a whole slew of tag pages or category page (or any pages without much originial of linkable content), chances are those pages are going to be in the Supplemental Results. Writing better meta tags might help. Check out this comment from this page: I have started to work aggressively on adding unique description and keyword meta tags content to individuals pages, and this has pulled one site out from supplemental so far.” I’ll show exactly how to write the code to do this dynamically for Wordpress in another post. 3. Make sure you are using the Meta-Robots tag correctly. It should look like this:
    <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="INDEX, FOLLOW">

    provided you want your whole website to be fully indexed and each link to be followed. Make sure that this is in your header (as every meta-tag must be).

There are going to be many more posts about the value of each of the meta-tags, but writing better tags, especially Meta-Description tags, are a damn good place to start.

    Nice to see someone else on the metadata bandwagon!

    Although meta data counts for a lot less than it once did some of the algos still compare what they find in the meta data with web site content - the lesson being ‘ tell the bots the same thing you tell your visitors’ and you will do a little better, or at least, you won’t do worse than you should be doing.

    Chris,

    Thanks. I totally agree. Espeically the meta-description, since it shows in the SERPS.
