Networking is where it’s at in SEO. And I’m talking about Networking 1.o. You know, like kicking it Old Testament (reference to the movie Juno) Networking.

Absolutely the only way to have a successful and sustainable stint in Search Engine Optimization is to be a good person who cares about others and lets that shine through in everything you do. A couple of little black-hat SEO things here and there most likely won’t kill you, but it’s got to be balanced with real life networking… and the authority links that come with it.

So next time you are thinking about what javascript to run to boost your amount of indexed pages, or how or where to buy links, maybe think about picking up the phone and calling some of those authority sites in your niche. Get to know the guy who runs the website, and offer to contribute something. Many times you’ll get a link, or an article, or whatever.

The web is just an extension of people, so think about the people, not the web. It’s like seeing the forest from the trees, or that old zen proverb about the finger point at the moon… that goes a little like this:

“All instruction is but a finger pointing to the moon; and those whose gaze is fixed upon the pointer will never see beyond. Even let him catch sight of the moon, and still he cannot see its beauty.”
